Rahane last went past the 3-figure mark in international cricket in August 2017 when he hit 132 against Sri Lanka in Colombo.Rahane’s place in the Indian Test side has come under the scanner even as the elegant batsman from Mumbai is keen on playing all 3 formats for the senior national team.Rahane’s consistency is on the wane and it was evident that he is no longer an indispensable member of the team when he was dropped from the playing XI for the first 2 Tests in South Africa in 2018 that also marked the start of an important overseas run for Team India. Incidentally, his slide started after a horror run in a 3-match home series against Sri Lanka in 2017 wherein he scored 17 runs in 3 Tests.Rahane’s confidence, it is safe to say, took a big hit after the axing from the team. Rahane’s consistent push to be in the limited-overs set-up for Team India has had an impact on his game, especially the mental aspects of it. The Rajasthan Royals star last played white-ball cricket for India in February 2018. He was not part of India’s 15-man World Cup squad even as the likes of Sourav Ganguly recommended him as an option at No.4 which had given Virat Kohli’s team a lot of headaches in the lead up to the quadrennial tournament.advertisement* Rahane’s decline in overseas formRahane flopped in India’s tour of England in 2018, managing just 257 runs in 10 innings as he failed to step up when the team needed him to in trying conditions. In Australia wherein India went on to clinch a historic 2-1 win, Rahane made 217 runs in 7 innings at an average of 31.00. Despite the lack of a 3-figure score, Rahane came up with a crucial 70 in the second innings in Adelaide that set up India’s win.India vs West Indies, 1st Test Day 1: Highlights | ReportDespite coming up with eye-catching performances, lack of consistency has been a cause of concern for Ajinkya Rahane. Before the South Africa tour in 2018, Rahane’s overseas average was a staggering 55. However, it has come down by close to 10 over the last 18 months. Can Rahane build on Antigua special?Nonetheless, a spirited 81 in Antigua on Thursday would have given Rahane the much-needed boost in confidence. India were in a spot of bother after Kemar Roach and Shanon Gabriel got the big wickets of Mayank Agarwal, Virat Kohli and Cheteshwar Pujara inside the 1st 8 overs of the Indian innings on Day 1 of the 1st Test. However, Rahane made sure India’s World Test Championship opener wasn’t a horror show as he stitched a 68-run stand with KL Rahul for the 4th wicket.Rahane began tentatively and played second fiddle to Rahul even as the ball was seaming around in the 1st session. However, he began to open up post Lunch on Day 1.Rahane hit 10 boundaries in his knock of 81 that might prove crucial to India’s chances of avoiding defeat in their first match of the World Test Championship. Also See:For sports news, updates, live scores and cricket fixtures, log on to indiatoday.in/sports.
