KEVIN CASSIDY EXPLORES THE DEVIOUS WORLD OF CLUB POLITICS AND ASKS WHAT TYPE OF MEMBER ARE YOU?

first_imgControversial former Donegal player Kevin Cassidy has explored the murky world of club politics in his latest opinion piece with the Gaelic Life, and has provoked his readers into choosing which type of club member they think they are. Kevin Cassidy has revealed in his column that what goes on behind the scenes in club football is a nasty and vindictive business.Cassidy was player/manager of Gaoth Dobhair last season, and he revealed in his weekly column that it was the first time he’d experienced what it was like behind the scenes at his club. Before then Cassidy said he simply focused on his role as a player, and never become involved in the selection processes carried out in selecting positions within the club. However, Cassidy was exposed to it this season in his role as Gaoth Dobhair Senior manager and said he was shocked at how nasty and vindictive the whole business is.Cassidy wrote, “During my playing days to be honest I just played football and that was all that bothered me I paid no real attention to what goes on behind the scenes.“In the last number of years and especially last year when I took on the role of player/ manager I realised how nasty and vindictive this business can be.Cassidy said that he was well aware of the haters and begrudger’s that exist at the club, but said it never bothered him because he only listened to the opinions of those he respected. “I know only too well that the haters and begrudger’s are out there but they have never annoyed or gotten to me as my approach has always been and always will be that the only people’s opinions that matter to me are the people who I respect and value.“Unfortunately these people exist in every club and in most cases they may be the people holding the club back.Cassidy then broke club members into four categories under the following headings – The Diehards, The Dinosaurs, The Critics, The Begrudger’s.Cassidy gives examples of what defines each category and asks his readers to select which one they think they truly are.The Diehards: Rain, hail or snow they follow they club at all levels and regardless of the result they support the players and always have something positive to say. They would do anything for the club from fundraising to stewarding on match days and do not look for any recognition in return. The club is all that matters to them and they will support it in every sense of the word. The Begrudgers:Nothing is ever good enough and they snipe and plot behind the backs of those actually trying to improve the club. They are the kind of people who travel to club games hoping for a defeat so that they can ridicule those actually trying to better the club. These are the kind of people who are nice to your face but at the same time will stick the knife in your back. The only problem is they do not realise that their intentions and bitterness sticks out like a sore thumb and are clear for all to see. The Critics:They go to all the games but constantly give out about individuals or team performances even though they may have never played before themselves. These people mean well but they do not understand that a bit of praise would help the club better than complaining all the time. They do not realise that young players benefit more from a pat on the back than from a kick in the arse but then again it passes their Sunday! The Dinosaurs:Club members stuck in the dark ages unwilling to move with the times for the good of the club. They have served the club well in the past but do not like the idea of change and do not understand that training methods and approaches have changed and in order to keep the club moving forward clubs must move with the times.Cassidy concluded by saying, “I would like to think that when I’m done I will be a Die-hard and support my club through thick and thin.Which one are you??KEVIN CASSIDY EXPLORES THE DEVIOUS WORLD OF CLUB POLITICS AND ASKS WHAT TYPE OF MEMBER ARE YOU? was last modified: January 11th, 2015 by Mark ForkerShare this:Click to share on Facebook (Opens in new window)Click to share on Twitter (Opens in new window)Click to share on LinkedIn (Opens in new window)Click to share on Reddit (Opens in new window)Click to share on Pocket (Opens in new window)Click to share on Telegram (Opens in new window)Click to share on WhatsApp (Opens in new window)Click to share on Skype (Opens in new window)Click to print (Opens in new window)Tags:Club politicsDeviousGAAgaelic lifeKevin CassidymembersMurkynewsSportlast_img
