Cyprus Bulgaria to further enhance cooperation Updated

first_imgThe presidents of Cyprus and Bulgaria on Monday discussed enhancing bilateral ties particularly in the fields of energy, maritime, trade, tourism, research and education.Bulgarian President Rumen Radev who is in Cyprus on a two-day official visit, held a tete-a-tete meeting in Nicosia with President Nicos Anastasiades, followed by consultations with the participation of their respective delegations and the signing of bilateral agreements.The two countries agreed to continue their regular political dialogue at a bilateral level but also to coordinate their actions both in international fora and within the EU. Bulgaria assumes the presidency of the EU Council on January 1.In statements after the meeting, Anastasiades said he briefed Radev on the Cyprus issue, and thanked Bulgaria for its principled stance on Cyprus.He repeated his readiness for talks with the Turkish sideRadev, speaking through an interpreter, expressed his country`s position on the issue and praised Cyprus’ initiatives for peace in the Middle East and the Mediterranean region through its cooperation with its neighbouring countries.He also said he and Anastasiades exchanged views on energy matters.“Bulgaria and Cyprus are working very actively regarding energy sources and this is a policy that I hope will soon lead to practical results,” he said.The two countries signed bilateral agreements concerning the cooperation program in science, education, culture, youth and sport for the period 2018-2021 and a memorandum of understanding and cooperation between maritime authorities.Anastasiades said the two countries agreed to continue their political dialogue and coordinate their actions in international fora and within the EU.  They also exchanged views on EU issues, ahead of Bulgaria’s first assumption of the EU Presidency.
